Starring: Ethan Hawke, Julie Delpy.

Story: Before Midnight is an upcoming American romance drama film and the sequel to Before Sunrise (1995) and Before Sunset (2004). Like its predecessors, the film was directed by Richard Linklater. As with the previous film, Linklater shares screenplay credit with the lead actors from the films, Ethan Hawke and Julie Delpy.
Nine years after the conclusion of Before Sunset, Jesse and Celine live in Paris as a couple, parents to twin girls conceived when they got together. Jesse is also struggling to maintain his relationship with his teenage son, Hank, who lives in Chicago with Jesse’s (now) ex-wife and who, after spending the summer with Jesse and Celine on a Greek island, is being dropped off at the airport to fly home. Jesse has continued to find success as a novelist, while Celine is at a career crossroads, considering a job in government.

TOUCH OF EVIL

(1958, U.S., 111 min. b&w) Orson Welles

The making of Orson Welles’s masterwork features behind-the-scenes stories as fascinating as the film itself. From its famous uninterrupted long opening tracking shot to its final scenes with screen goddess Marlene Deitrich, it still packs a punch with modern audiences. Besides being essential for any cinephile, it deserves repeated viewings.

Charlton Heston plays special narcotics agent Mike Vargas investigating a possible link between fatal bombings in a Mexican border town and the Grandi crime family. The family head is played by Akim Tamiroff while Welles plays a corrupt cop in league with the Grandis and at odds with Vargas. In an act of vengeance, he tries to get at Vargas by threatening his wife, played by Janet Leigh, with sinister drugs and violence.

This may sound like a typical cop drama, but Welles turns it into a tour de force, taking us into the strip clubs, brothels and dark twisted alleys of the border town. He creates nightmare images so vivid, you can practically smell the raw sewage in the canal that runs through the slums. The rocking rhythms of Henry Mancini’s Afro-Cuban score complement the striking shadowy photography by Russell Metty.

This 1998 “Director’s Cut” was re-edited according to very detailed notes left by director Welles. Presented here on genuine motion picture film, this is a great cinematic treat best appreciated on our big screen.

ORPHÉE (Orpheus)

(1950, France, 95 min. b&w, Eng. subtitles) Dir. : Jean Cocteau

Painter, poet, playwright, novelist and, last but not least, filmmaker extraordinaire, Cocteau offers us his own, hallucinated (re)vision of the Greek myth of Orpheus. Be transported to a magical 1950s Paris, where a famous poet (Jean Marais) is torn between his love for his wife, Eurydice (Marie Déa), and that of an elusive, mythical princess (Maria Casarès). Oscillating between the world of the living and the dead, Orpheus is a journey like no other – Cocteau’s unique vision fully realized. “Hauntingly beautiful.” – British Film Institute.

“Orphée is assuredly Jean Cocteau’s greatest film and remains one of the most profound and unsettling pieces of cinematic art – an unforgettable journey into darkness.” – James Travers, Toronto Star

THE LUCK OF GINGER COFFEY. + Irish short.

(1964, Canada/U.S., 100 min. b&w) Irvin Kershner

An ambitious Irishman immigrates with his wife and daughter to Montreal with plans of becoming a successful journalist. He soon discovers that it takes more than luck to make it in this hostile foreign land. Barely able to survive, his family begins to lose faith in him as he makes one drunken promise after another to them in his quest for success. Will his wife and daughter return to Ireland or will they stand by his side through thick and thin? Robert Shaw (of JAWS fame) and Mary Ure give outstanding performances in this screen adaptation of a novel by Brian Moore (“The Black Robe”, Hitchcock’s “Torn Curtain”) Downtown Montreal of the mid 1960’s is displayed here like you have never seen.

This is a truly excellent film from the director of STAR WARS: THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK! and it is adored by critics everywhere. It is definitely one of those films that, once you see it, you wonder why it is not better known. Part of the reason it has languished in obscurity is because it was never given a proper release during or following its limited theatrical run. Fortunately, we have located a very nice uncut film print for you. What better way to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day. This is one of our finer screenings and will not disappoint. Be one of the lucky ones to see it before it returns to the shadows of obscure wonders.

Guest Speaker: Nationally recognised award-winning journalist Tim Burke, who has written for the Montreal Standard, Gazette, Star and Daily News. Expect to hear the fascinating hidden story of the Montreal press of the 60’s & 70’s.

THE SILENCE OF THE LAMBS

(1991, U.S., 118 min.) Jonathan Demme

A young FBI cadet must confide in an incarcerated and manipulative killer to receive his help on catching another serial killer who skins his victims.

Demme’s very creepy thriller spawned a host of imitators and launched Anthony Hopkins into American stardom through his iconic performance as the very twisted and darkly comic, Hannibal Lector. The film won numerous Oscars, including Best Picture, Best Actor (Hopkins), Best Actress (Jodie Foster), and Best Director (Demme) and was one of the definitive films of the 1990’s. Come for the film and stay for the fava beans and a nice chianti!

VERTIGO

(1958, U.S., 129 min.) Dir.: Alfred Hitchcock.

Starring James Stewart, Kim Novak and Barbara Bel Geddes. Music by Bernard Herrmann. This is undoubtedly Hitchcock’s ultimate masterpiece and figures on many top ten lists by the most respected film critics. Dave Kehr of the New York Daily News has said: “…here is evidence that movies can occupy the highest plane of artistic expression.” With its Freudian undertones, complex color scheme, spots of subliminal editing and mind-bending camera trickery, we can discover new hidden meanings at every viewing. Watching this film is like having someone dangle you over the edge of a tall building, not sure if they will pull you up to safety or let you fall to your death. It’s that exciting! Offered here is the restored version with eye-popping color that looks quite impressive on our big screen.

Yen plays Chen Zhen, (Bruce Lee’s signature role), who returns to China to fight unwanted villains who have taken control of the city. Directed by award winning Andrew Lau (INFERNAL AFFAIRS which inspired the Oscar-winning THE DEPARTED by Scorsese) Also featuring Anthony Wong (THE UNTOLD STORY) and Shu Qi (MILLENIUM MAMBO, SO CLOSE.) This is the Montreal premiere with a nice 35mm cinemascope subtitled print. Bonus: special dvd giveaways courtesy of Well GO USA and Chinese teas and pastries at intermission.
